   “Sad One”

a

During the summer of 2001 NJB recorded a performance with his band Purple Thurmus that stunned those in attendance…

“I wanted to capture the essence of live performances which never seem to translate in the studio.” says Blakey who fronted his cherry picked troupe of players culled from the Missionary Babtist churches of central Mississippi. Montgomery Tubbs was the heart beat of the group with his unwavering pocket, while Hank Collins’ 5 string precision filled out the now infamous rhythm section. Humphrey Snooks of “Pay No Attention” brought his gospel ‘A game’ to the keys and rhythm guitar  punctuating the quiet spots and grandiose crescendos.

“I have never been able to fully explain how Purple Thurmus does it… They have found a way to combine brilliantly written heart felt songs with the excitement and enthusiasm of  traditional alt rock theatre, endowing it with the clarity and punch of R and B once again demonstrating that musicians from The Deep South are simply ‘in another league’ from the rest of the American musical spectra.” ~Jacob Lafacha
